Application for $500 Horticultural Scholarship
Sponsored by Sacramento River Valley District (SRVD) of California Garden Clubs, Inc.
History of Scholarship
The first district scholarship was awarded in 1993 under the leadership of District Director for SRVD, Sheila Newell. Sheila was approached by Ruth Morris, a long-time and active member of SRVD and various garden clubs. Ruth proposed a plan to establish a scholarship within SRVD for students interested in horticultural studies at the collegiate level. Ruth funded the first $500 and specific guidelines for the district’s award; wishing to remain anonymous. Eunice Little assumed the administration of the scholarship duties for the district. Ruth has since passed on; leaving her legacy intact. Sheila and Eunice now feel that the time has come to reveal Ruth’s generous spirit. Since the inception of this award in 1993, Ruth would be extremely pleased that the scholarship is still a goal for the district, but would no doubt wish her name to be only in the background
~~At least one (1) $500 scholarship will be awarded each year.
~~Every effort is made to provide more than one scholarship each year.
~~Individual clubs are encouraged to donate to this district scholarship fund.
~~List of recipients provided below….Some years, two $500 scholarships were awarded.
