FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Important Meetings and Dates
District Meeting dates, duty assignments and other important info
8/12/2009 -- First of all, thank you for your patience!
Next, please save the date: September 29th. It's a Tuesday. This is the date of our first Board Meeting. All club Presidents and the Executive Board members are meant to attend. It will be held at the Arden-Dimick Library, at the corner of Watt Avenue and Northrop Avenue in Sacramento. We'll begin at 10 a.m. and clear out by 2. Because our time will be limited, this will be a work-through-lunch meeting, and you'll need to bring your own lunch! More details will follow, but for now, put this on your calendar. Thanks.
Because we cannot reserve the meeting room further than six months in advance, I must wait until November to schedule our second annual Board Meeting for (hopefully) May 20, 2010. Pencil that date in, also, if you please. Our first District Meeting of the year will be held on October 15th. Our topic will be "Invasive Species"; and while we do not yet have the name of the speaker, we expect an expert from one of our local colleges to be on hand. Again, as soon as we have a name, we'll let you know! Honest!
What we DO know, however, (and now YOU do, too) is who is in charge of the various jobs that day.
The Luncheon on October 15th, 2009, will be provided by Pioneer Garden Club
The Table Decor will be furnished by Gardeners of the Grove and Elk Grove Garden Club
The Hostesses will be from River Valley Garden Club
The Plant Sale will be organized by Arden Park Garden Club, Davis Flower Arrangers and CA Center for
Urban Horticulture
The Raffle will be hosted by Carmichael Geranium Society and Evergreen Garden Club
In case you're wondering, our theme for the coming year is expanding on last year's theme. It will be "Growing Greener and Smarter". We're hoping to educate (as well as entertain) you with topics regarding the entire organized garden club world and what it has to offer. And---ta-da! We're really, truly getting a website going!
You are all anxious to know about the speakers and tours, etc. for the coming year. Me, too. A calendar of events would be wonderful right about now! I'm sure you understand that sometimes these things cannot get nailed down immediately, but all the same, YOUR membership needs to be able to make their own plans, including the production of your membership yearbooks. And so, here's what we DO know after your Executive Board met a couple of days ago:
There will be a field trip to Shaunie Briggs' gallery (she spoke at our June meeting about creating art with "found" items) in Winters in October. Probably the 23rd. She will serve us brunch, then we'll proceed to tour nurseries/gardens in the Capay Valley for the rest of the afternoon. This is likely to be a carpooling-type affair, since it's often troublesome to get enough people to commit to a bus ride. We'll keep you posted on this.
There will be a trip to the
San Francisco Bouquets to Art Show, De Young Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA again this year in March 2010. If you went last year, you know much fun we had and what an incredible display this is. If you only take one tour this year, this is the tour to take!!! Reservations will be taken at the October District meeting with final $50 payment due by Feb 18th with the exact date of the trip in March to be determined. The bus only hold 14 passengers and fills up quickly so reserve and pay for your space early.... Can't tell you the exact date, yet. I'm fairly certain that we WILL have our small bus engaged for that trip.
October 17-18, 2009: Shepard Garden & Arts Center (semi-annual) Sale: We host the one and only food concession stand! We sell doughnuts and coffee in the morning, and hot dogs and sodas in the afternoon! We always have a lot of fun -- good thing, because our participation is mandatory. We normally earn (at least) enough money to pay our rent on the facility's use! Please alert your club's membership to the need for volunteers to work one or more 2-hour shifts on either Saturday or Sunday. By the way, all of the other clubs that use the Center have booths with many plants, gifts, books, white elephants and other miscellany available. It's a great place to begin looking for holiday gifts!
March 27-28, 2010: Shepard Garden & Arts Center (semi-annual) Sale: ditto above. Think Mother's Day gifts, Easter, etc.
There will be a dedication of a Blue Star Highway Memorial marker on Wednesday, October 21 at the Geranium City Garden Club's Memorial Garden. It is located at the Fairfield Senior Center, 1200 Civic Center Drive, in Fairfield 94533. Geranium City Garden Club has been working on this project for several years. It is costly and time-consuming, but well worth it. These dedications are always extremely powerful. You'll come away with renewed respect, patriotism and pride for our country and the servicemen and -women who protect and defend us. Plan to attend and wear red, white and blue!
The CGCI Fall Board meeting commences on September 11, 2009 in Concord. It is my understanding that each Club President has been sent an email invitation to attend. I encourage you all to make at least a one-day trip of it-- and see just how much energy the whole "organized" garden club world has! (Go to www.californiagardenclubs.org for more info)
The CGCI Annual Convention will be held June 4-7, 2010 in Westlake Village. That's our State President, Maryanne Lucas' hometown, so it promises to be a terrific convention. If any of you can take the time to attend, it would serve us all well to see up close and personal just what is entailed in hosting a convention. (don't forget, it's OUR turn in 2012!)
Speaking of Maryanne Lucas, she will be our featured guest speaker at our June 17th District Meeting. She will entertain and educate you with her project, "Kids Growing Strong".
Now pay close attention to the following:
The Luncheon that day (June 17) will be served by the SRVD Board (unless another club wishes to use the opportunity for a great fundraiser.
The Table Decor will be furnished by Vaca Valley Garden Club
The Hostesses will be Arden Park Garden Club and River Valley Garden Club
The Plant Sale will be handled by Folsom Garden Club, Davis Garden Club and Carmichael Geranium Society
The Raffle will be hosted by Woodlake and La Perita Garden clubs
(and going backwards)
The February 18th meeting will feature a speaker (yet to be determined) who will share with us the "opportunities for floral design that abound in your very own yard". We hope for suggestions from any of you for speakers from your own organization, from nurseries or garden centers. If you have an idea, please contact Judy Smith at arty3@comcast.net She's looking for just the right person(s)!
The Luncheon on February 18, 2010 will be served by Elk Grove Garden Club
The Table Decor will be furnished by Davis Flower Arrangers
The Hostesses will be from River Valley Garden Club
The Plant Sale will be run by Pioneer Garden Club, Clarksburg Garden Club and Geranium City Garden Club
The Raffle will be hosted by Arden Park Garden Club and Woodlake Garden Club
Our first District Meeting of the year will be held on October 15th. Our topic will be "Invasive Species"; and while we do not yet have the name of the speaker, we expect an expert from one of our local colleges to be on hand. Again, as soon as we have a name, we'll let you know! Honest!

"WAIT!!! HOW DID WE GET PUT INTO THESE POSITIONS???", you ask.
Well, many of you did sign up at the June meeting, so these assignments come as no surprise. Many of you were unable to make the commitment at that time (it's understandable) and were therefore assigned tasks by your Executive Board. If there is a problem with what you were assigned to do, please accept our apologies and take it upon yourselves to make a switch with someone else.
Now, going back to speakers. Maureen Gormley (maureenandchuck@earthlink.net) who has graciously collected and organized the lists of speakers and trips enjoyed by the various member clubs, has heard from a scant few of you. If your group still has not submitted those names and contact information, please do so at your earliest possible opportunity! Every one of us benefits from those names and places!
I think that's going to be all for today's installment. Please, again, accept my humble gratitude for your continued patience with us (me) and hang in there!
Getting greener and smarter...
This is the body of the
announcement ...
