Notice: Due to furloughs at the University, the Arboretum office will be closed from December 21 - January 1. No one will be available to return general voice or e-mail messages until January 4. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have questions about making a year-end donation or a contribution to the Nature's Gallery project and need assistance, please contact the Arboretum's Resource Development Manager, Suzanne Ullensvang, and leave a message by phone (530) 752-8324 or email sullensvang@ucdavis.edu.   She will respond to your year-end gift questions within 24 hours.  If you need to report an emergency at the Arboretum while our office is closed, please call UC Davis Facilities at 530-752-1655. The gardens remain open every day of the year and we encourage you to plan a visit to enjoy the winter beauty in the Arboretum.  Happy holidays.

In the Garden: Oak Discovery Trail Taking Shape
Quercus candicansA new interpretive trail will reveal the wealth of stories associated with the Arboretum's nationally-recognized oak collection in Shields Oak Grove. The Oak Discovery Trail is taking shape over the next year with a new pathway and plantings as well as interpretive signs, plant labels, and an audio tour. The remarkably diverse oaks have deep connections to human civilizations and a rich variety of associated plants and animals.

What stories would you like to hear about oaks? Help us select themes for our Oak Discovery Trail signs and programs by taking this brief survey.

Just installed last month, a series of ceramic mosaic tree labels will be one of the featured attractions of the Oak Discovery Trail. The labels were created by UC Davis undergraduates and community volunteers through the Art-Science Fusion Program. Each of the 35 mosaic labels features hand-formed tile leaves, acorns, bark, and other associated insects and wildlife from a tree in our oak collection. Visit Shields Oak Grove to see these beautiful new labels.

Special Recognition for Arboretum Mural
PNAS coverWe're proud to report that the "Oak Family Tree" mural, an Art-Science Fusion installation highlighting the relationships of the Arboretum's oaks in Shields Oak Grove, was featured recently on the cover of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a prominent national scientific journal. The cover photo accompanied a scientific article by UC Davis graduate student Ian Pearse describing his research on the patterns of insect diversity on the trees in Shields Oak Grove.

The Arboretum is delighted by this special recognition for our beautiful mural and for the scientific value of our tree collection. The mural is located on the south wall of the Arboretum Restroom near the Gazebo and Shields Oak Grove.

Volunteer at the Arboretum: Training Class Starts January 20
Do you enjoy meeting new people, learning new skills, and giving back to the community? Consider volunteering at the Arboretum!

The Arboretum is currently recruiting for the following volunteer teams: Gardeners, Nursery Caretakers, Curatorial, Planting Records, Docents, and Naturalists. New volunteers must sign up and complete a four-week introductory training class. Depending on the team you select, additional specialized training may be scheduled following the introductory class. Once training is complete, volunteers are expected to commit a minimum of three hours of volunteer service per week on one of the Arboretum's on-going volunteer teams.

The new volunteer training class starts Wednesday, January 20 and runs for four consecutive Wednesday mornings through February 10. For more information or to sign up for the volunteer training class, please contact Suzanne Ullensvang at (530) 752-8324 or
sullensvang@ucdavis.edu.

Fruit Tree Workshop in January
One of the Arboretum's partners, the California Center for Urban Horticulture, and the Master Gardener program have an exciting fruit tree workshop coming up on January 8 that may be of interest to Arboretum Friends. Spend the day learning about creating and maintaining sustainable home orchards with topics such as bare-root tree selection, pruning and winter pest-prevention measures. For information visit: http://ccuh.ucdavis.edu/public.
